History

We started We Walk The Line organization when our son, Army Specialist Connor Shea died by suicide. As a long standing law enforcement family, we knew of the statistics involving suicide, but at that moment we experienced the tragedy of suicide at a very real and personal level. We had to find a way to heal, help, and find something good out of our catastrophic event.

We learned there is a suicide epidemic within the ranks of the United States Military and First Responders. With 22 a day lost, providing awareness was our first primary focus. We quickly learned that providing awareness took resources and clinical professionals that we could not provide. We wanted to focus our efforts at the individual level.

During our research we also realized that trust and pride play a huge role in individual wellness and treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Many military members and First Responders are too proud to ask for assistance. As we snuggled with our pup, we found that he created a calmness and trust for us. Our question of how we could help came in the form of our dog’s paw. Our answer was Psychiatric Service Dogs (PSD). To provide the resources, training and funding for these support dogs we created a small team of doers who helped in starting this journey to support our Veterans and affected First Responders. Our goal is to gather funding and resources towards service dog acquisition, training, and placement with Veterans and First Responders within Southeast Michigan.
